Silica

Bone/Tissues/ Skin
Silica is mainly known for its effect on Bones, Skin, Hair, Teeth, and Nails. It is primarily involved in the formation of Collagen and connective tissue such as cartilage. Silica helps to catalyze the enzyme glycosaminoglycan which starts the formation of the collagen matrix while also being a part of this matrix. In essence, this collagen layer forms a sticky substrate which minerals can bind to and form a solid congealed bone, (think concrete: calcium, silicates, and water)[1].  Without it, Calcium would have nothing to stick to. This is one of the reasons why Calcium supplementation alone is not enough to help mitigate the effect of Osteoporosis.[2]

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is needed for the elasticity of skin, strength of hair, and pain-free functioning of our joints. The reason why our joints move and slide smoothly is due to the presence of collagen. It essentially forms a fibrous gel-like matrix that can be bound with different minerals and proteins to form skin, bone, teeth, and cartilage.  Adequate Silica means adequate collagen, which means fewer wrinkles, pain-free joints, and more supple looking skin.[3]

Reduction of Aluminum Absorption
Aluminum is very toxic to the body and loves to situate itself in the brain. Over the past few years, a link between Alzheimer's and Aluminum toxicity has been established. Consuming Silica has been proven in clinical trial to effectively pass Aluminum out of the body via the urine[4].  It does this through limiting Aluminum absorption through the gastrointestinal tract. In other words, it decreases the bioavailability of aluminum and thus excretes the excess.

Cardiovascular/ Immune  Health
Due to the fact that Silica is involved in the forming of blood vessels and arterial walls, it is imperative to the integrity of the cardiovascular system. It is also found that Silica disappears from the aorta with age and can impair its function[5][6]. This leads to a decrease in the flexibility and function of the aorta.  This is why it can be a solid remedy for atherosclerosis (the collection of plaque inside the arteries and hardening of the arteries). The intake of Silica can drastically reduce varicose veins as well.

Silica is also found in the production of neutrophils, T lymphocytes, phagocytes and NK cells, all of which have a role in boosting the immune system. It should be noted that this immune response comes from the consumption of Ortho-Silicic Acid. The inhalation of crystalline silicon dioxide has severe negative biological effects.[7]
